Mette Gets His Reply as Tusker Humble Gor Mahia 3-1 in Super Cup

NAIROBI, Kenya — Julien Mette may have had the last laugh.

Last season, the Tusker FC head coach made his feelings clear after his team beat Gor Mahia 1-0 at Wang’uru Stadium.

Mette felt the playing surface had made it difficult for his team to play at their best.

“If we could have played on a better surface, we would have beaten them 2-0.”

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor also complained about the pitch after the defeat.

Fast-forward to the FKF Super Cup, and Mette’s Tusker produced a much stronger statement.

Tusker beat Gor Mahia 3-1 at Nyayo Stadium, putting in a dominant performance from start to finish.

Francis Oduor opened the scoring for Tusker before Eugene Ikutwa added a second.

Ian Simiyu then found the back of the net to give Tusker a comfortable advantage.

Gor Mahia’s only goal came through an unfortunate own goal by Ikutwa.

That means something rather funny happened in the match — all four goals were scored by Tusker players!

Three went into Gor Mahia’s net, while one went into their own.

Did Mette finally prove his point?

After last season’s comments about the playing surface, Mette can certainly enjoy this result.

This time, there were no complaints about the pitch.

Instead, his team scored three goals against one of Kenya’s biggest clubs and lifted the FKF Super Cup in convincing fashion.

For Gor Mahia, it was a disappointing afternoon. For Tusker, it was a statement victory.

And perhaps, after that 1-0 win last season, Mette now has something else to say.

Maybe he really did need a better pitch after all!

One thing is certain: Mette may now feel like he owns someone.
