Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has criticized Dandora Stadium, saying it is not suitable for FKF Premier League matches.

Speaking on Gor TV, Akonnor said the playing surface at the stadium is below the standard needed for top-flight football. He urged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to remove the venue from the list of approved Premier League stadiums.

“When we were asked to play at Dandora, the field was not really appropriate for the league. If you ask me, I would say the authorities should not allow matches to be played there,” Akonnor said.

Dandora Stadium has a capacity of 4,000 fans. It was reopened in March 2024 after renovations that reportedly cost Ksh276 million. The stadium has a FIFA-standard artificial turf and modern floodlights, making it one of the venues used regularly for FKF Premier League matches.

Akonnor also raised concerns about Wanguru Stadium in Mwea, Kirinyaga County. Gor Mahia lost to Tusker FC at the venue in the Mozzart Bet Cup, and the coach believes the pitch was also not good enough.

He said there are several stadiums in Kenya that do not meet the standards required for top-level football. According to him, poor playing surfaces make it difficult for teams to perform well.

“There were a few things that were challenging, but we managed. Now that we have gone through it, I can raise my concerns with the authorities,” he added.

Akonnor hopes FKF will review the condition of some stadiums and ensure that only venues with quality playing surfaces are allowed to host Premier League matches.
