Blogger and politician Francis Gaitho and Canada-based lawyer Miguna Miguna have blasted Arsenal fans in Kenya, accusing them of pouring explosive energy into football celebrations while remaining conspicuously absent from protests over corruption, police killings and economic hardship. As jubilant supporters flooded pubs, estates and social media timelines after Arsenal’s latest victory, Gaitho saw something darker in the frenzy: a country capable of mobilising overnight for a foreign football club, yet painfully sluggish when its own future is on the line. “Where are all these stupid idiots whenever calls are made to mobilize around citizens’ rights, economic justice, or accountability?” Gaitho wrote in a furious post on X. He mocked what he called a culture of “performative excitement”, saying Kenyans had mastered the art of chanting for London millionaires while ignoring the crises choking their own lives. “A society that struggles to organize consistently for its own dignity and prosperity, yet easily rallies around symbolism and external validation, has its priorities badly distorted,” he added. Then came Miguna with a rhetorical sledgehammer. “Where were they when despots Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto and Fred Matiang’i murdered hundreds of Kenyans?” Miguna asked, before invoking the deadly Gen Z protests of 2024 and the looting of “TRILLIONS of shillings of public resources”. His verdict was brutal: “Zombies all over.” The imagery online was impossible to miss. Red jerseys. Smoke flares. Honking convoys. Packed bars shaking with chants of “Come On You Gunners”. Yet when demonstrations erupt over taxes, disappearances or police brutality, the crowds often thin out into scattered pockets of defiance.
