The Harambee Stars squad that represented Kenya at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has received a major reward after the government fulfilled a promise made to them in September 2025. Kenya Police FC defender and Harambee Stars captain Abud Omar confirmed that players and officials who were part of the team have now received two-bedroom affordable housing units. The initiative was part of a government pledge aimed at supporting athletes beyond their football careers. Speaking on behalf of the entire squad, Omar thanked President William Ruto and his administration for honoring the commitment. “On behalf of the entire team, players, and officials who participated in CHAN, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to His Excellency William Ruto and his government for fulfilling the promise made to us,” Omar said in a statement shared on his social media pages. According to Omar, each beneficiary will contribute Ksh1 million towards the cost of the house, while the government will cover the remaining amount. He described the project as a life-changing opportunity that will provide stability and security for many players and their families. “The opportunity to own affordable two-bedroom houses, where we contribute Ksh1 million and the government covers the remaining cost, is a life-changing initiative that will have a lasting impact on our lives and those of our families,” he added. The defender also noted that the gesture shows that the government values the contribution of sportsmen and women in the country. He said the housing project will help athletes build a better future after retirement from active sports. “As captain, I am proud to speak on behalf of my teammates in saying thank you for recognising our efforts and supporting our future beyond football. This gesture demonstrates a genuine commitment to the welfare of Kenyan athletes and sports officials,” Omar stated. The affordable housing reward has been welcomed by many football fans and stakeholders across the country. For years, there have been concerns about the welfare of athletes after retirement, with many former players facing financial challenges once their playing careers come to an end. Many observers believe the housing project could become an example of how governments and sports organizations can support athletes by investing in their long-term well-being rather than focusing only on performance bonuses. The CHAN team represented Kenya with pride and played an important role in promoting the country’s football ambitions on the continental stage. Receiving permanent homes is not only a reward for their efforts but also a sign that their contribution has been recognized at the national level. As the players settle into their new homes, the initiative is expected to inspire other athletes and strengthen confidence that sporting achievements can be rewarded in meaningful ways that extend beyond the football pitch. For the Harambee Stars squad, the houses represent more than just buildings. They symbolize security, appreciation, and a brighter future for the players and their families.
