The experienced defender revealed that he had secured an opportunity to move to the United States, but the deal collapsed after unrest in the country led to the temporary closure of the US embassy, making it impossible to process his travel documents in time. Speaking to Kishai TV as quoted by Pulse Sports, Omar explained that returning to Kenya was not part of his original plan, as he had hoped to continue his career abroad. “Like I said, even coming back to Kenya, I didn’t want. I had an offer to go and play outside the country, and then, as you all know, there was a time we had protests in Kenya. I was supposed to go to the US, but it didn’t happen because the embassy had been closed due to the unrest,” he said. The 2024 Gen-Z protests created major disruptions across the country, affecting businesses, institutions, and key government operations, including embassy services. For Omar, that disruption came at a personal cost, ending a potential overseas transfer. Instead, the defender continued his football journey in Kenya, where he remains one of the experienced names in the local game. Abud Omar began his career with Admiral FC before rising through the ranks at Bandari FC and later Tusker FC, where he established himself as one of the country’s reliable defenders. He is also no stranger to European football, having previously played for PFC Slavia Sofia in Bulgaria, Cercle Brugge K.S.V. in Belgium, Sepsi OSK in Romania, as well as Greek sides Ionikos F.C. and AEL Larissa. Despite the missed US opportunity, Omar’s career remains one filled with valuable experience both locally and internationally. His story highlights how events beyond football can sometimes change the path of even the most carefully planned careers.
