Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has strongly dismissed expectations from some Kenyan fans who believe the national team can reach the semi-finals of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking candidly about Kenya’s chances, McCarthy emphasized the huge gap in quality between Kenya and Africa’s top football nations, warning against unrealistic ambitions.

According to the former South African international, teams such as Senegal, Egypt, Morocco, Ivory Coast, and South Africa are currently operating at a much higher level compared to Kenya.

Group Stage Qualification Should Be the First Target

McCarthy insisted that Kenya’s realistic objective should first be qualifying from the group stages rather than dreaming of a semi-final place.

“People mustn’t be silly. For me, I think we could have a chance to get out of the group stages because the level is high and most of our players are playing in the Kenyan league. And the Kenyan Premier League, compared to the South African League, is very low,” he said.

The coach pointed out that the majority of Harambee Stars players compete in the local Kenyan Premier League, which he believes still lags behind stronger leagues like South Africa’s PSL.

Tough Opposition Awaits

The 47-year-old tactician questioned how Kenya could realistically target the last four without first defeating some of Africa’s strongest teams.

“You can’t be too ambitious and think, ‘Hey, I want to reach the semi-final’. Who are you going to beat to get there? Imagine you get Bafana Bafana or the Ivory Coast. The top two go through. Where are you going to finish? I have been in the game long enough,” he explained.

McCarthy stressed that tournament football requires practical thinking, especially when facing elite opponents with stronger squads and more international experience.

Frustrated by Unrealistic Comments

The former Manchester United F.C. first-team coach also admitted that hearing unrealistic expectations from fans can be frustrating.

“It does upset you a little bit when you hear people giving silly comments and making statements like that, thinking they know more!” he added.

His remarks underline his desire to build the national team steadily and focus on achievable progress rather than public pressure.

Looking Ahead to AFCON 2027

Kenya will co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside Uganda and Tanzania, raising expectations among local supporters who hope for a strong performance on home soil.

However, McCarthy’s message is clear: Harambee Stars must first focus on competing effectively and reaching the knockout stages before dreaming of lifting the trophy.

For now, realism—not hype—appears to be the coach’s preferred strategy.
