The political landscape in Kisii County is slowly beginning to take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, and one name increasingly attracting attention is Essy Okenyuri Nyaituga.

Although she has not officially declared interest in any elective seat, political conversations across the county continue to place her among the leading figures being watched closely — especially in the race for the Kisii County Woman Representative position.

This week, the conversation gained even more momentum after Senator Richard Onyonka openly expressed his willingness to mentor and support Essy Okenyuri in her political journey.

Onyonka Praises Essy Okenyuri’s Leadership Potential

Speaking in Utawala during a visit by senators led by Amason Kingi, who had gone to console him following the death of his mother, Onyonka described Essy as a bright and promising young leader.

The senator recalled the political period commonly referred to as the “Tanga Tanga era,” noting that Essy Okenyuri and Kibagendi played a major role in mobilizing support for then-Deputy President William Ruto in the Gusii region.

Onyonka’s remarks have now fueled speculation about possible political realignments and alliances as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of 2027.

What makes the development even more interesting is that Onyonka is currently associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement and is also seen as an ally of Fred Matiang’i, one of the key political figures expected to influence politics in the Gusii region moving forward.

The Woman Representative Race Already Taking Shape

While no official campaigns have been launched yet, political observers believe the Kisii Woman Representative seat is likely to become one of the most competitive races in the county.

This follows indications that the current Woman Representative, Donya, could shift focus to the Bonchari MP seat in 2027, effectively leaving the Woman Rep position open.

That possibility has already sparked early lobbying, quiet alliances, and strategic positioning among aspiring leaders.

Essy Okenyuri’s growing visibility, combined with her previous political mobilization experience and expanding networks, has made her one of the names frequently mentioned in local political discussions.

Gloria Orwoba Raises Concerns

The growing attention around Essy Okenyuri was also evident during a recent Jubilee Party event in Rionsune attended by Fred Matiang’i.

During the gathering, Senator Gloria Orwoba reportedly expressed concerns that if Essy Okenyuri were to join their political camp, she could easily emerge as the preferred candidate for the party ticket.

Orwoba is said to have urged Matiang’i not to consider handing Essy the ticket — a statement that many political observers interpreted as a sign of the influence and support Essy may already be building quietly behind the scenes.

A New Generation of Gusii Politics?

The mention of Essy Okenyuri alongside established political names reflects a broader shift happening in Gusii politics, where younger leaders are increasingly gaining recognition and influence.

Many voters, especially young people, are now looking for leaders they feel are accessible, energetic, and capable of connecting with grassroots issues.

Whether Essy Okenyuri officially enters the race or not, the growing political endorsements and discussions around her name suggest that she could become a major figure in Kisii County politics in the coming years.

For now, the political season may still be early — but one thing is becoming clear: the race for 2027 in Kisii is already quietly taking shape behind the scenes.
